Books that read recently

I recently got a chance to read Enid Blyton's books. Basically these books are meant for children, but there is no harm for adults like us reading these books. All these books (Wishing Chair, Children at the Green Meadow, Caravan Family) are based in UK countryside (like England, Scotland) and were written between early 1920's and late 1950's. The language is very simple and is not very hard to follow the language. The character depicted are very simple and not the high flying ones. Joint family system is emphasized in most of the books but the current trend of joint-family is declining.

Happy Reading.

Retail Industry & India

Retail industry in India is all set to boom, with all major players set foot in it.
Bharti - WalMart, Reliance, Goenka's and 'n' number of small players in the line. 3 Reliance Fresh stores were shut in Kerala and couple of them were ordered to close down in UP. These are done to keep the middle-man happy.

The middle-man in turn make huge profits and the real farmers don't reap any benefits. Alternatively these Retail majors say that they will directly source from the farmers and by eliminating the middle-men. Initially I feel, they will eliminate the middle-man and farmers will get benefited. Once the middle-man are gone, farmers will be forced to sell their products to these people, dictated by these majors. This will be even more worse and the poor farmers will be left at their major. If this can be addressed, then it will be a win-win situation for every one including consumers.

India Today was telling that wastage of the commodities will become less due to the storage facility these majors have. That's true.

Govt on the other hand should appoint a watch-dog committee and should ensure fair competition between all the majors and there by ensuring the benefits to be passed on to end-farmers and consumers.

PS: there is a RelianceOne Fresh opened right at the door-steps of my house. I had an opportunity to buy, the place was absolutely crowded and people were jostling for space and the commodities displayed in the shelves were flying like anything. I didn't see any major price difference between a local kirana stores and RelianceOne, infact I found few items were over-priced in RelianceOne than the local stores. The place was too small and they have tried to stock all available items in less space. Then can address this.

CIAO until next time

Cricket & India

India lost 2 matches in current world cup. First match to Bangladesh and the third match to Srilanka. There are many articles, blogs, discussions that are going around in newspapers, TV & Net that what should Indian cricket after their virtual exit out of the world cup. Fans wants Captain, Senior players & Coach to be sacked. Some are in opinion that Indian team selectors, BCCI chief should also resign on moral ground. Fans treat the senior players are demi-gods and they fail to perform they burn their effigies and vent out their ire.

Why is such a fuss, when India lost their world-cup match and exited out the WC. Wins and defeats are part of a sport. Loosing side didn't give 100% or the winning side gave their 200% and snatched victory. BCCI - Board of Cricket Control of India was established to promote the game of Cricket in 1890's to promote the game of cricket when India was under colonial-rule. When India attained independence, BCCI stayed and over the years it became seat of power after India won 1983 world-cup defeating West-Indies.

Money started pouring into BCCI and started filling its coffers. Even politicians started to contest for the BCCI Top post. Money came in via sponsorships of cricket matches and most of the money were siphoned off by BCCI and politicians. Players started endorsing products that were sold in Indian markets. overnight Indian Cricket players were treated as Gods by their fans. Betting/match-fixing became the part of the Cricket. But BCCI neglected the cricket stadiums and did nothing to improve them.

Fans have expressed the they will stop buying products that are endorsed by Indian cricketers. If someone can give me list of products that are not endorsed by them, let me know. I will buying them instead.

I also read, that some of the senior players were not allowed to take their families with them and this added more pressure and were not in form to give their 100%.

Getting in touch with old friends

For the past 3-4 days, I got a chance to renew contacts with my old friends both school and college friends.

One of my school mate is a leading scientist in public sector and won some awards.

Renewing the contacts happened after I sent a text message(aka SMS) to my old friend and he gave one lead and thus I came to know about all these details.

Also when browsing another n/w site, I read my school where I spent 8yrs. It was so much fun during school days. Also i stumbled upon my old teacher's email id. I sent an email to her and she replied back saying that she is US these days.

Huh lot of changes.

Trouble in WB

Having said that I lived in Calcutta for 3 years and can understand Bengali, I had a chance of interacting with my B friends who are core communists to the nature and can do anything (no offense meant to anyone). I had seen for the first time in my life that Bandhs, rallys and protests can bring life to standstill. The only two other occasions where I witnessed that life came to standstill was once in Chennai when Ex-CM's adopted son got married. (I happened to work nearby), the second occasion was when Coimbatore witnessed bomb-blasts when BJP organized rally and LKAdvani had to address the issue. I happened to work in Coimbatore at the time) Off late i have seen the same thing in Bangalore the IT Capital where bandhs were organized. I would not like to go into the details of that now. Lets come back to WB. Off late Singur and Nandhigram are seen hitting the news in TV and newspaper. In singur Tata Motors wants to construct 1lakh car plant. WB CPM Govt which is anti-industries in nature, extended warm hand to Tata, but it faced stiff opposition from TMC chief Mamata Banerjee. Nandhigram was in news due to SEZ. I was in Kolkata in Jan2007, when i heard that Saleem grp from Malaysia is interested in setting up an industry and govt announced that for this purpose land will be surveyed. but the villagers got wrong information and they dug up the roads leading to Nandigram so that no officials come for the survey. There was police firing 2 days back and lots of villagers have died. lets see where it goes from here

Satyajit Ray Movies

Born in a South-India, I have a lived in Kolkata (Calcutta) for 3 years and can understand Bengali very well. Lately i have developed likings for Satyajit Ray movies esp Feluda. He is a detective by profession and can solve mysteries like Sherlock Holmes. I have seen all the Feluda movies directed by Satyajit Ray and his son Sandip Ray. JaiBaba Felunath is one master piece that I really liked.

Satyajit Ray is one master director. During his days Film technology was not that much great, but he managed to create movies that conveys social meanings in his movies. He is a great writer and story teller. I also happened to watch his another master pieces - 3 daughters. In this movie there are 3 different stories and the epicenter of all the three stories are women. I particularly liked one story, where a women is passionate about her jewels. She runs away with her jewels after her husband goes away to make up for the losses in his business. While running away, her boat overturns and she dies. Her husband is not aware of this and gets her a necklace which she wanted for a very long time from him. The story ends, when the wife ghost comes back to take the necklace from her husband and the husband also follows her to the eternity.
